From The Perspective Of Lila

Dear Diary, today was a cool and crisp morning but a sweltering afternoon. I went out to the beach so early in the morning that no one was there. I carried a small basket filled with flowers I had plcuked from the gardenaround our house. There was a low tide then and I settled down and scattered the flowers to the sacred rock to pray for my family. It was later in the morning before more women came and offered flowers to the sacred rock. Sometimes, I feel that praying at the sacred rock was the best time of the day for her as it was the only perfect and peaceful one. After praying, it was time to start work. When I reached home,I saw Bela and Kamal brushing their teeth with twigs they had broken off the neem tree. I told them to get dressed or they will be late for school. They merely shrugged and said I was the one who was late. Sigh, I wish they would understand. I was supposed to make a fire before going to the beach. However, when I woke up in the morning, I felt that I had to flee to the beach as i could not face the dead ashes or the dirty cooking pots of the night before going to pray. If I had started work first, I might not cope and just faint. Hari came home soon after and provided milk for us to drink. He was very caring and always made sure that Mother and Father would always have enought to drink. I hate my father very much. He would always come home drunk and make Mother's room fill with drunkenness. Mother is still ill, I hope that she would recover soon. I was told by Mother to sweep, go to the market and cook. I then got up to start work.

Signing off,
Lila
